What is margaret ruthven lang?

Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972) was an American composer and pianist of Scottish descent. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and began composing when she was just nine years old.

Lang studied piano with Benjamin J. Lang (no relation) and composition with Stephen A. Emery and later with George Whitefield Chadwick. Her first composition was published when she was 16.

Lang was a prolific composer, writing more than 200 works in a variety of genres, including songs, choral music, piano pieces, chamber music, and orchestral works. Lang's style was largely conservative, with influences from German romanticism and Impressionism, but she also incorporated folk music, Celtic melodies, and other forms of world music into some of her works.

Lang was also an active member of Boston's musical community, serving as a member of the Boston Manuscript Society and the New England Musicians' Club. She was one of the first American composers to join the Society of American Women Composers.

Lang never married and lived to be 103 years old. Her music fell out of favor for much of the 20th century but has recently been rediscovered and performed by contemporary musicians and ensembles.
